In 1987, the Managing Director of Goebel Miniatures, Chuck Harley, approached Olszewski to do a display for the Disney Snow White and Seven Dwarfs figurines. As it turned out, this was the first display Bob ever produced and considered it a challenge.
As Bob started to get into the display's creation, he wanted to put the figurines he created in character. The setting is at dusk. The dwarfs are finishing the day's work and are beginning the evening with a meal and music. Bob put the dwarfs, Doc and Grumpy in the front part of the display along with Snow White. Grumpy is holding a pick while Doc, who Bob considers to be a leader, is holding a lantern. They are on their way home from the mine. Snow White is standing at the front door calling the dwarfs to come home for dinner. Downstairs, music and energy fill the kitchen and living room areas. Sneezy with a "squeeze box;" Bashful dancing; and Happy, with a pie, enjoy the music. A note on Bob's original sketches for the prototype display states "all dwarfs are in character with the movie with props." Upstairs, the slowest of the dwarfs, Sleepy, with a bucket, and Dopey with a mop, are just finishing up mopping the upstairs and will soon be on their way downstairs to join the others. A note on Bob's sketches shows that Dopey can be turned to look out the front window.
Bob did some apparent switching of the dwarfs activities or functions. For example, Bob has Sneezy playing the "squeez box" instead of Doc. In the story contained in the book which Bob used for background, Doc was playing the Concertina. "Doc, Bashful and Sleepy were playing concertina, cymbals, and flute, and Sneezy was yodeling, trying not to sneeze." [Viking Press, New York, NY 1979]. When Bob created his story to put the dwarfs in character, he felt that Doc's role as the leader was more appropriate and placed a lantern in his hand rather than the concertina.
The original display that came with the offer puts the figurines in character with a story created by Bob. The second display offered shows all of the figurines at once. As it turns out, the second display was done before Bob did his. It was sent to Bob for coloration. He also modified the sidewalk so that all figurines could be seen at once. The second display was originally developed by Grolier Enterprises and was produced by Lilliput Lane in England at more expense than Bob's display.
